The loop

Every Turn Brings a New Decision

The game runs on the sun track: Each spot is a month. During each month there are 4 phases. Mission, Action, Headlines, Month End

Every fifth month, first player passes clockwise

Missions wait on the track for their launch window
  1. Mission phase

Anyone with a mission this month gets to launch or continue their mission.

Before you launch, announce it to the table. Another player can hand you 5 Units and one of their cubes in what we call a Joint Mission. They collect the Science rewards, your tech and buildings cover them too, and every one of them buys you a free reroll. Which you're going to want.

  2. Action phase

No mission this month? Then you get to build.

Plan, Research and Buy, as many times as you can pay for, simultaneously with everyone else. If you flew a mission this month, then you don't get any actions. Just sit and collect your units and science.

  3. Headline phase

Everyone rolls. High roll draws two headlines and keeps one.

MaxQ Magazine and The Clarkonian are reporting on the space race. They have some interesting twists to throw into the game.

  4. Month end

Collect Units, train astronauts and build rockets.

The further along your Support track you are, the bigger the paycheck. If the public isn't into you, you're going to have a hard time.

The action phase

Three actions, Unlimited power

Everyone acts at the same time, and there is no limit on how many actions you take, only on what you can pay for. Buy rockets, hire astronauts, draw new missions, plan your missions and research tech.

Plan a mission

Move rockets, astronauts and tech onto a mission card, then drop a marker on the sun track for the month it comes due and a matching one on the card itself.

You can fold Research and Buy into the same planning action, so a mission can be drawn, crewed and scheduled in one go.

The astronaut marks the current month. Moon Station takes 1 month, so its ship goes on month 2.

Research

First draw each month is free

  • Draw four research cards
  • Or shuffle the discard and draw two

You can look at the cards for free, but you need to pay to keep the card in your hand. Buildings also have a science cost. Buildings stay in play forever, but your missions need to be planned in order to play.

Buy

  • Rocket 10Units Lands in assembly on your board
  • Astronaut 30Units Lands in orientation, two months from flying
  • Technology 4Science Draw two tech cards, keep one

Pick an agency

We're starting with nine agencies, each with a special ability and its own starting resources. Your strategy will vary wildly depending on which agency you choose to play with.

Joint missions

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em

Team up on another player's mission and you share in its science rewards.

Here, the blue and yellow players have joined red's Crewed Mars Mission. If red fails any of these tasks, red has two free re-rolls to try again.

  • You pay to be there. A seat on someone else's mission isn't free.
  • You're their safety net. If they fail a task, they can use you for a free re-roll.

The headline phase

Read all about it

Two "news" organizations cover the space race. At the end of every month everyone rolls. The highest roll draws two headline cards, keeps one and plays it. One paper hands you something good. The other hands somebody else something bad. Just like real life.

62 People only read the headlines anywhere right? Max Q Magazine is known for their "everyone is good" spin. While The Clarkonian is more in for the clicks. If you roll the highest, draw 2, pick one.
